The New Yorker tries to be a little too clever for its own good

This month’s cover of the New Yorker blundered in its efforts at beatification of Barack Obama.

Always eager to paint Obama skeptics as troglodytes and beer-guzzling rednecks, the editors outdid themselves. They parodied the Obama parodists, with a cover that depicted The Big O and Mrs. O decked out like Islamic terrorists.

An honor killing in Georgia?

An honor killing took place in Georgia over this past weekend. 54-year-old Chaudhry Rashad admitted to murdering his daughter. Her offense? She refused to go through with an arranged marriage. 

Honor killings are common throughout the Muslim Middle East: They occur in Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and even Turkey, as this podcast details..

Should employers refuse to hire smokers and overweight applicants?

Depending on whose statistics you believe, healthcare costs have increasing by 8~12% each year over the past five years. Whether the increase has been more like 8% or more like 12%, one thing is for certain: employee healthcare is now a major cost factor for any business.

Many employers have begun to require their workers to bear more of these costs. Employee contributions to health insurance premiums have risen in recent years. This trend will likely continue.

For some workers, the cost sharing has become more personal……
